First Birthday Photos: Ideas for a One-Year Session
A first birthday is a milestone worth photographing in a way that feels like your family. not a stiff, posed sitting, but the real, slightly chaotic joy of turning one. Here are our favourite ideas for planning a one-year (or “cake smash”) session.
Props to bring
- A crown, especially popular for little girls
- A “1” or “ONE” sign
- A small chalkboard for writing your child’s name or birthdate
- The family pet, if you have one
- A favourite soft toy or comfort object
- A traditional costume, if you have one
- A name banner or sign
- Something from your baby’s newborn photos, for a sweet before-and-after comparison
- A cake for your little one to dig into, mess and all
If there are older siblings at home, invite them along for a few frames too. some of the sweetest images come from a big brother or sister joining in.

What to wear
Choose something relaxed and comfortable that your child can move freely in. We tend to favour soft, pastel tones, since busy patterns and bright colours pull attention away from your child’s face. Pack a change of clothes as well — the outfit change doubles as a natural little break if the mood dips.
Timing and mood
One-year-olds are usually happiest with a full tummy and a good nap behind them, so late morning after solid rest tends to work well.
And if things wobble mid-session. that’s completely normal. Some of the most touching photos come from exactly those moments. We’re not chasing a perfect smile — we’re after your family’s real story.
A few more things to onsider
- Bring water and a small snack — raisins or rackers work wonders for morale.
- One-year sessions work best somewhere your child already feels safe: at home, or another familiar spot. If home isn’t an option, a studio that shoots in natural light is the next best thing — flash tends to tartle little ones, while natural light keeps the mood settled for longer.
- If a cake smash is part of the plan, lay a sheet or blanket under the setup first — clean-up is much easier afterwards. Many families also bring a second, untouched cake for everyone else to share, so the “smash”cake stays just for the photos.
We always shoot young children in natural light, and we have a studio space set up to ake that possible.
