Anniina & Teemu — A Scout Love Story and a Countryside Wedding at Pyhtää's Medieval Church
Some love stories begin in a café or an app. Anniina and Teemu’s story began in the Scouts — and after many years together, it led them to the altar beneath the vaults of a medieval stone church.
As a wedding photographer, I love days that begin gently. The morning started with preparations and a first look moment by the corner of a building next to the church — and it became one of the most tender scenes of the day. Anniina and Teemu stood on opposite sides of the corner, not yet seeing each other, simply holding hands. For a while they just stayed there, fingers intertwined, until they stepped out and saw each other in their wedding attire for the first time. A first look before the ceremony also gave us unhurried time for portraits: we wandered through the village, by the river and the old stone bridge, and laughter was never far away.
A church wedding in Pyhtää is an experience in itself. St. Henry’s Church was built around 1460, and its medieval wall and ceiling paintings have survived through the centuries — it is one of the best-preserved medieval churches in Finland. Yet the most beautiful thing wasn’t the history; it was what Anniina and Teemu brought with them. During the ceremony, they tied Scout scarves around each other’s necks — a quiet tribute to where it all began, and a promise to continue the same journey, now as husband and wife. There’s a special warmth to a Scout wedding, and this moment brought tears to many eyes already in the church.
When the church doors opened, the sky offered a light summer rain — but no one minded. Under a canopy of umbrellas, the guests showered the couple with birch leaves, floating down like green confetti. And the ride to the reception had style of its own: the wedding car was a gorgeous turquoise Volkswagen Beetle that collected smiles all through the village.
At the venue, the birch theme continued: the hall was decorated with birch branches and natural materials — the beautiful, handmade atmosphere of a true Finnish countryside wedding. And then came the speeches. Oh, the speeches! The best man wiped his eyes in the middle of his own toast, Teemu was moved to tears thanking his loved ones, Anniina laughed and cried at the same time — and in the end, there was hardly a dry eye in the room. These are the moments documentary wedding photography exists for: real emotions that cannot be staged.
The evening culminated in the first dance — and when we stepped outside into the dark for a moment, the rain gave us a gift. The final photographs were taken under an umbrella, backlit, raindrops glowing like stars. A perfect ending to a day that began with a Scout promise, years ago.
