An August Wedding at Helsinki Cathedral and a Manor in Espoo — Jenni & Sampo

Some wedding days stay with me for years, and Jenni and Sampo’s August wedding was one of them. Their day took us from the historic streets of central Helsinki to the gardens of an 18th-century manor just outside the city — ending in the kind of golden late-summer light you only get during a Nordic August.
The first look
We began the day with a first look before the ceremony, a moment I warmly recommend to every couple. The two of you see each other privately, without an audience, and get to breathe before the celebrations begin. When Sampo turned around and saw Jenni in her dress for the first time, that look on his face couldn’t have been staged. Moments like these are exactly why you hire a wedding photographer.
The ceremony at Helsinki Cathedral
Jenni and Sampo said their vows at Helsinki Cathedral, the iconic white landmark above Senate Square and one of the most breathtaking places to get married in Finland. Its tall white columns and bright, airy nave need no decoration.This wedding took place during the pandemic year, and you can see a small trace of that era in the photos: guests wearing masks in the pews. And yet the warmth in that church was undeniable, when the doors opened and the newlyweds stepped out, no mask could hide the smiles.
Portraits in historic Helsinki
After the ceremony, we took our time with portraits in front of the House of the Estates and the Bank of Finland: two of my favourite portrait spots in central Helsinki, with elegant facades and soft light between the stone buildings, all within walking distance of the Cathedral.Over the course of the day, we photographed portraits in three different settings: before the ceremony, after it in the historic city centre, and at sunset in the manor gardens. Three locations, three completely different moods and the full arc of the day in one album.
A garden party at a historic manor in Espoo
The celebration continued at Espoon kartano, a manor dating back to the 18th century, just a short drive from Helsinki. Old halls, portraits on the walls and a lush garden make it one of the most photogenic wedding venues in the capital region. The couple served a delicious all-vegan buffet, that was so good that guests were still talking about it over cake. One detail I keep recommending to other couples: a board where guests wrote down date ideas for the newlyweds. A lovely, personal way to carry your loved ones' wishes with you for years. A wedding crossword kept the tables laughing.
Sunset portraits to end the day
As the evening softened, I took the couple outside one more time. The golden light in the manor park was the perfect ending — those few minutes at sunset often produce the most beautiful images of the whole album.
