A Sunset Couple Session on a Helsinki Beach — Dancing, Bubbles and a Pink Sky
The sky had been thick with clouds all day — one of those grey late-autumn days when nobody expects miracles from the light. But just as we arrived at the beach in Vuosaari, eastern Helsinki, the sun broke through. The next hour was a gift: first a golden sunset over the sea, then a sky that slowly turned pink and lavender. Moments like these are exactly why it’s worth showing up even when the forecast promises nothing.
Dancing on the sand
J and S needed no directions — they simply danced. They spun, laughed and fell into each other’s arms on the sand, and my only job was to keep up. Movement is a couple session’s best friend: when the body is busy, the face forgets the camera. That’s why I often ask couples to dance even without music — the sound of the sea is enough.
Bubbles in the air
I had brought along a bottle of alcohol-free sparkling wine, and it had an important role to play. The couple gave the bottle a proper shake, the cork popped, and the spray flew in an arc against the evening light. The laughter must have carried to the next beach. Small props work exactly like this: not so much for the photos themselves, but because they give the couple something to do — and the genuine reactions take care of the rest.
Blue hour and golden beach grass
After sunset we moved into the tall beach grass, glowing in the last of the light. The pink afterglow in the sky, the still surface of the sea and two people wrapped around each other in warm coats — late autumn might just be the most beautiful season for photography in Finland, if you give it a chance.
Why I recommend autumn couple sessions
Many couples hesitate to book a session in late autumn: what if it’s grey, cold, windy? But this is when the light is at its softest all year, sunset happens at a civilised hour, the beaches are empty, and cosy knits and coats bring a warmth to the photos that summer sessions simply don’t have. And if the sky stays cloudy all day? Then we wait for that one golden hour — like we did this time. It was worth it.
