A Summer Picnic Engagement Session at Pitkäkoski in the Helsinki Region
A hot July evening, a path lined with tall spruce trees, and a picnic in a wildflower meadow with wine and a guitar. This engagement session by the Pitkäkoski rapids on the Vantaanjoki river, photographed before the couple’s wedding, was Finnish summer at its very best: warm, relaxed and full of genuine moments.
A walk under the spruce trees
We started with a walk in the forest along the river. The alley of tall spruces is one of my favourite photo locations in the Helsinki region: the straight trunks frame the image like nature’s own gallery, and the afternoon light filters through the canopy in soft patches on the path. The couple’s deep green outfits matched the forest perfectly — as if they had always belonged to this landscape.
Guitar, wine and laughter at sunset
We wanted the photos to capture how these two actually spend time together, so they brought along props that tell their story. We spread a blanket in a meadow where the grass grew waist-high and the clover was in bloom. The picnic was pure romance: wine, pretzels and music. The groom-to-be played the guitar while the bride read her book — and sometimes they simply sat side by side in the golden evening light. These quiet, unhurried moments often become the most treasured memories.
Spontaneous moments make the photos come alive
Tender and romantic as the evening was, there was plenty of laughter too. By the end of the session all the nerves were gone, and the evening ended in giggles as the groom tickled his future wife’s nose with a clover flower. It’s exactly these playful, unscripted moments that make photographs feel alive.An engagement session before the wedding is also the perfect way to get to know your photographer and relax in front of the camera. By your wedding day, the camera will already feel like an old friend.
My tips for your own engagement session
Bring something personal — a guitar, a book, a picnic basket or even your pet. Props from your everyday life make the photos truly yours. Schedule the session for the evening: an hour or two before sunset the light is at its softest, and the long Nordic golden hour gives us plenty of unhurried time. And the most important tip: don’t try to pose. Walk, talk, laugh — I’ll take care of the rest.
