How to Prepare for a Newborn Photography Session. Everything You Need to Know.

A newborn session is one of the most beautiful memories you will ever create. With a little preparation, it can also be the smoothest and most enjoyable experience. Here are the most important tips to help you get ready for your baby’s first photo session.
Feeding Before the Session
Try to keep the baby awake for as long as possible before the session, and time the feeding so that you feed the baby just as we are about to begin. A full tummy is the single most important factor for a successful newborn session.
If you are breastfeeding, it helps to pump a small amount of milk in advance as a backup. The studio situation is very different from your usual home routine, and in my experience babies tend to feed most efficiently from a bottle in this setting. Having a bottle on hand can make a real difference. A content, well-fed baby means beautiful, relaxed photographs.
Baby’s Skin and Clothing Before the Session
The first part of the session is usually photographed in a wrap or bowl. Before you arrive, make sure the baby has been wearing something loose that will not leave marks on the skin, wrapping in a muslin cloth works well. It also helps to loosen the nappy a little in advance so that any pressure marks have time to fade before we begin.
Bring a Dummy
Please bring a dummy to the session, even if the baby does not normally use one and even if you do not intend to introduce one. During the session a dummy can be really helpful — babies usually settle back into a pose much more easily with a dummy. The session runs more smoothly when the baby does not need to be lifted back and forth between your arms and the setup constantly. Do not worry, the baby will not get used to the dummy during a single session.
What to Expect During the Session
A newborn session is typically about 80% everything other than actually taking photos. Please do not be concerned if no photos are taken during the first hour, babies simply need time to settle. Patience and a relaxed pace are the most important ingredients, and the best photographs always happen on the baby’s terms.
When Should You Book?
The best time for a newborn session is 5 to 14 days after birth, when babies sleep deeply and are easiest to pose. I recommend booking during pregnancy, as dates fill up quickly.
