What to Wear for Your Maternity Photoshoot. 8 Outfits Already in Your Wardrobe
One of the most common questions I hear from expectant mamas before their session is: “I have no idea what to wear!” Many assume they need to order elaborate, sparkly maternity gowns to look good in photos. The truth is, the most beautiful, relaxed, and atmospheric maternity photos almost always come from outfits you already own — or can borrow from your partner’s side of the wardrobe.
The most important things are that you feel comfortable and that your bump gets to shine. Here are eight tried-and-true pieces that work beautifully for a maternity photography session in Helsinki or anywhere in Finland.
1. Your partner’s white shirt or any oversized button-down
This is my absolute favourite. A loose white shirt borrowed from your partner looks stunning in photos. We can leave it fully unbuttoned to let the bump show naturally, creating that relaxed, intimate lifestyle feel that makes maternity images truly timeless.
2. A fitted knit or jersey dress
If you want to highlight the beautiful roundness of your bump, a stretchy, form-fitting dress is the perfect choice. In warmer months, a lightweight jersey dress works beautifully; in autumn or winter, a soft monochrome knit dress creates a gorgeous silhouette. Avoid large prints, the focus should stay on you and your bump.
3. Your pre-pregnancy jeans, worn open
Yes, really! Your favourite jeans from before pregnancy make a wonderful outfit for maternity photos. We simply leave the button and zip undone, paired with a pretty bralette or an open shirt, it’s a classic, effortlessly stylish look that feels real and personal.
4. A simple bralette or underwear set
A beautiful, minimal bralette, think delicate lace or soft fabric, works as a lovely base for layered looks. Wear it under an open shirt, a knit cardigan, or a denim jacket. Classic black, white, or soft skin tones always photograph beautifully.
5. A bodysuit or fitted plain top
A simple, stretchy bodysuit or plain top is a reliable choice. Clean, elegant, and unfussy, it lets the shape of your bump come through without any distracting details.
6. A denim jacket
Layering always looks great in photos. A classic denim jacket thrown loosely over the shoulders, or worn open over a dress, adds a casual, effortless edge to any maternity session.
A few extra tips on colours and styling:
Earth tones, soft pastels, white, beige, and muted shades all photograph in a timeless way. Avoid large logos, bright neon colours, and busy small patterns — they pull attention away from your face and your bump. If your partner is joining the session, try to coordinate your colours loosely so they complement each other without being too matchy-matchy.
Before every session I’m always happy to help with outfit planning. We can put together a look that feels completely like you.
