What to wear for a family photo session — colour palettes and outfit tips

You know that feeling when you look at an old family photograph and the first thing you notice is someone’s odd shirt or a colour that’s just a little too bright? Clothing can either support the mood of a photograph or pull attention away from what really matters — the people in it.

In this guide we walk through everything worth thinking about when choosing outfits for your family session in Helsinki or anywhere else. We have also put together 6 concrete colour palette ideas to inspire you.

The most important rule: coordinate, don’t match

The most common mistake in family photography is trying to dress everyone in identical outfits. The result usually looks stiff and staged — more like a school photo than a real family.

Instead, aim for a cohesive mood and colour palette. When the family shares a similar tone and a consistent level of formality, the photographs look harmonious without anyone needing to look identical to anyone else.

Perfect styling does not make perfect photographs. Real moments, togetherness and love show in every image — regardless of what anyone is wearing.

Colours that work for family photography

Colour choice is perhaps the single most important decision you will make when preparing for your session. A good palette draws attention to faces and emotions — a poor one draws it to the clothes.

Favour muted, earthy tones

Soft, natural tones such as cream, beige, warm brown, sage, muted blue and terracotta work beautifully both outdoors in nature and in urban environments. They do not compete with the background or with each other, and they create a calm, timeless atmosphere that photographs will still feel fresh in ten years.

Avoid very bright colours

Strong primary colours — bright red, vivid yellow, electric orange — can dominate the frame and pull attention away from faces. If you want colour, choose a muted version: rust instead of bright red, mustard instead of lemon yellow, sage instead of grass green.

One accent colour works — several don’t

If you want colour in the images, consider giving one person — often a child — a clear accent colour, while everyone else stays in neutrals. A child in a green dress against a family in cream and beige creates a lovely focal point without chaos.

Layering adds life to photographs

One of the easiest ways to improve the overall look of a family is to add layers. A knit, a gilet, a scarf, a jacket or a hat gives photographs depth and personality — and practically speaking, layers are a lifesaver if the weather changes.

Layering works especially well in families with children of different ages. A baby in an oversized knit, a toddler in a jacket, a teenager in a long coat — the combination looks organic and natural rather than staged.

What to avoid for a family photo session

Large logos and text: They draw attention away from faces and can date a photograph instantly.

Neon colours: Bright neons stand out against other tones in a way that is hard to balance — they tend to dominate the frame.

Completely identical outfits: Coordinated always looks better than matching. Identical outfits risk looking more like a school photograph than a family portrait.

Clothes that don’t feel like you: If an outfit is unfamiliar or uncomfortable, it shows in posture and expression. Wear something you feel good in.

Formal clothing for a relaxed outdoor session: If you are shooting in a park or on a beach, a silk blouse or a formal dress can look and feel out of place. Match the outfit to the location.

Bare feet or shoes?

Indoors, bare feet or socks can be wonderfully relaxed and cosy — they add warmth and intimacy to lifestyle and home sessions. Outdoors, neutral shoes work best and suit almost any outfit.

Shoes matter more than most people think. Make sure everyone has footwear that suits the location — and always bring a spare pair for outdoor sessions, especially with young children.

For small children: Simple woollen booties or soft-soled slippers are often the loveliest option and complement almost any colour palette.

Practical tips before the session day

✦ Try everything on in advance: Do not leave outfit decisions to the morning of the session. Dress the whole family together the day before and see how the looks work together.
✦ Eat properly before the session
✦ Arrive relaxed — we are never in a hurry
