Photographing a 2-Year-Old — Energy, Laughter and Real Expressions
Many parents ask me the same question: “Can a photo session really work when your child is two? Ours won’t sit still for a second.”
It can — and that’s exactly why sessions with two-year-olds are among my favorites. A child this age doesn’t pose and doesn’t pretend. Everything the camera sees is real: the shyness, the joy, the wonder, and that wild laugh that comes all the way from the toes.
In this session, we spent an hour playing with the delightful Eeva. Not a single “sit there and smile” moment — instead, we peeked from behind armchairs, studied the Christmas tree ornaments and opened presents. And as you can see from the photos, we captured the whole range of expressions.

With a two-year-old, the session is built around play. We keep the camera ready while the child does their own thing, the best photos always come from moments nobody planned. The parents get the easiest job: stay close and enjoy. And if there’s a cry or a snack break in the middle, that’s part of it. We reserve enough time so nothing needs to be rushed.

Would you like photos like these of your own child?
A two-year-old changes before your eyes — six months from now, there’s a whole different little person in their place. That’s exactly why this age is worth capturing now.I’ve been photographing children and families for over 15 years, and I promise: your child doesn’t need to know how to pose. Being themselves is enough — I’ll take care of the rest.Read more about children’s photo sessions → See pricing and book a session →P.S. A photo session also makes a lovely gift — a gift card from the grandparents for a birthday, for example.
Tips for parents: how to make a session with a 2-year-old a success
- Don’t rehearse smiling beforehand. The fewer expectations built up for the child, the more relaxed they’ll be on the day.
- Bring a favorite toy or comfort item. A familiar object brings a sense of safety in a new place — and often ends up in the sweetest photos.
- With outfits, less is more. Solid, light colors work best in the studio and keep the attention where it belongs: on the expressions.
- Most importantly: come relaxed. Making the photos work is my job — your only job is to be present.
- Time the session around your child’s best hours. For most, that’s mid-morning, after a nap and a snack. A tired two-year-old has no energy for playing — or for the photographer.

Haluaisitko tällaiset kuvat omasta lapsestasi?
Kaksivuotias muuttuu silmissä — puolen vuoden päästä tilalla on jo ihan eri tyyppi.
